Zu Chongzhi was a person from the Northern and Southern Dynasties.
Zu Chongzhi (429-500), whose name is Wenyuan, was born in Jiankang (now Nanjing), and his ancestral home was Fanyang County (now Laishui County, Hebei), and he was an outstanding mathematician and astronomer during the Northern and Southern Dynasties of China.
Zu Chongzhi has received a good family education since he was a child. His grandfather told him about "fighting and changing the stars", his father led him to read the scriptures and classics, and the influence of his family, coupled with his own diligence, made him have a strong interest in natural science, literature, philosophy, and especially astronomy, and he had a reputation for erudition in his youth.
In 461 (the fifth year of the Song Dynasty in the Southern Dynasty), Zu Chongzhi served as the assassin of Southern Xuzhou (now Zhenjiang, Jiangsu), and successively served as an official in Southern Xuzhou and a public government to join the army. During this period, although Zu Chongzhi's life was very unstable, he still continued to insist on academic research and made great achievements.
In 494, the state power was crumbling, coupled with the continuous wars between the North and the South, Zu Chongzhi's good political ideas could not be implemented within the country, let alone realized. In 500 (the second year of Qi Yongyuan of the Southern Dynasty), this outstanding great scientist died at the age of seventy-two.
Extended information: Zu Chongzhi's life works are numerous, and the content is also multifaceted. In terms of mathematics, the book "Fixation" is one of the famous "Ten Books of Arithmetic", which was listed as an arithmetic textbook by the Tang Dynasty Guozijian, and was prescribed to study for four years, but unfortunately it has been lost.
In terms of the astronomical calendar, he compiled the "Great Ming Calendar" and wrote a "refutation" for the Great Ming calendar.
In terms of the annotations of ancient classics, Zu Chongzhi has works such as "Yiyi", "Laoziyi", "Zhuangziyi", "Commentary on the Analects", and "Interpretation of the Book of Filial Piety", but they have also been lost. In terms of literary works, he is the author of "The Narrative of Differences", and fragments of this work can be seen in books such as "Taiping Yulan".
Before Zu Chongzhi, the calendar used by people was the "Yuanjia Calendar" compiled by astronomer He Chengtian. After years of observation and calculation, Zu Chongzhi found that there were great errors in the "Yuan Jia Calendar". So Zu Chongzhi set out to formulate a new calendar, and in the sixth year of Emperor Xiaowu of the Song Dynasty (462 AD), he compiled the "Great Ming Calendar".
The Great Ming calendar was never adopted during Zu Chongzhi's lifetime, and it was not officially promulgated and implemented until the ninth year of Emperor Wu of Liang (510 AD).
