The modern English alphabet is completely borrowed from 26 Latin letters. The so-called "Latin alphabet" is the alphabet of the script used by the ancient Romans.
English began to become written in the Anglo-Saxon era around the sixth century AD. At that time, it was the Roman Catholic missionaries who were responsible for recording the spoken language of the locals. The problem they faced was that there were more than 40 different sounds in English (i.e., Old English) at that time, but they only had 23 Roman letters in their hands (there were no j, u, and w at that time), and they could not correspond to them all.
So they experimented with many different methods, such as adding letters, adding diacritics to letters, writing two letters in a row, and so on to correspond to different pronunciations, and gradually formed the 27 letters of Old English and some spelling rules.
After the Norman Conquest in 1066, many of the clerks were French, and they discarded some of the spelling rules they were not accustomed to, and introduced some new rules from the French language, and made some new exceptions for different situations. This led to a dramatic change in the spelling and diction of the English language at that time. Some letters were abolished, others were reformed.
The 26 letters that gradually evolved into modern English.
The 27 letters of Old English are as follows:
a æ b c d ð e f g h i l m n o p r s t þ x y
and rarely used k, q, v and z.
There are no letters j and u. In the Middle Ages, the alphabet was replaced by a w; It was replaced by a, but it was retained in the later International Phonetic Alphabet; and was replaced by the word group th, but the former was retained in the later International Phonetic Alphabet.
