Midori Okajima was originally a young employee of Japan's No. 1 trading company "Rising Sun Heavy Industries", and he was well-educated, mild-mannered, and knowledgeable. During a mission to transport confidential company documents by sea ship, he was ambushed by the Black Reef Chamber of Commerce, which targeted the documents. After snatching the disc containing the documents, Black Reef's female gunner Levy kidnaps Midori Okajima and prepares to demand a ransom from Rising Sun Heavy Industries.

In order to cover up its unfair trading, Glorious Sun Heavy Industries decided to erase the disc and Okajima. The anime version of "Black Reef" is adapted from the manga "Black Lagoon" created by Rei Hiroe, and the manga has been animated twice in four years, and was broadcast in April and October 2006 in two episodes of 12 episodes each, directed by Madhouse Productions and Nao Katabuchi. The plot of the anime is adapted from the middle of volumes 1 to 7 of the manga.
