<>1, "Hanging Book on the Horns" Li Mi of the Tang Dynasty heard that Bao Kai was in Wushan and went to visit. He rode an ox and hung a scroll of the Book of Han on the horns of the ox, reading it as he walked. Yang Su, the Duke of Yueguo, saw him on the road, pulled the reins of the horse and followed him from behind, saying:
What book makes you diligent to this point? Li Mi said that it was "The Biography of Xiang Yu". Yang Su then talked to Li Mi and thought he was a genius (see "New Tang Dynasty Book: Li Mi Biography").
Later, he used the metaphor of "hanging books on the horns" to read diligently.
2, "Bag Firefly Reflecting Snow" This is an allusion composed of two stories. Sac fireflies: fireflies in bags; Yingxue:
Take advantage of the reflection of snow. I read a book at night using the light of the fireflies in my pocket and the reflection of the snow. Che Yin studied diligently, kept his hands on the scroll, and was erudite and talented, but his family was poor and could not afford lamp oil, so he used a white cloth bag to hold dozens of fireflies in the summer, and used the light emitted by them to read, day and night (see "Jin Shu Che Yin Biography").
Liang Sun Kang's family in the Southern Dynasty was poor, and he had no money to buy lamps and candles, and he often read in the snow at night. Later generations often take the two allusions of "Bag Firefly Reflecting Snow" as a model of diligence.
3, "Chiseling the Wall to Borrow Light" Kuang Heng in the Han Dynasty studied diligently and did not have a lamp or candle, and the neighbor had candlelight, so Kuang Heng chiseled a small hole in the wall and read the book with the light that came in from next door (contained in "Xijing Miscellaneous Notes"). Later generations used "chiseling the wall to borrow light" to describe diligent study and hard study.
