Fang Dahong (c. 1621-1690) was a native of Huailai County, Xuanhua Prefecture. Legend has it that he was a general of Zheng Chenggong, one of the founders of Hongmen, a patriotic organization against the Qing Dynasty and the restoration of the Ming Dynasty in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, and one of the "first five ancestors (Shaolin Five Ancestors)" of Hongmen. The five ancestors are divided into "Heaven and Earth Society", "Triad Society", "Pao Brother", "Elder Society" and "Little Knife Society" in the country, and Fang Dahong is the founder of the "Triad".

Hongmen introduced

In his early years, Fang Dahong had apprenticed to Yin Hongsheng, and under the recommendation of the latter, he defected to Shi Kefa to persist in resisting the Qing Dynasty, and served as Zheng Chenggong's general after failure. In 1661, Fang Dahong was ordered to go to the Shaolin Temple in the south of Jiulian Mountain, Putian County, Xinghua Prefecture, Fujian, to worship the abbot of Zhitong, cut his hair and become a monk, and practiced martial arts.

In 1672, after the imperial court "burned down Southern Shaolin", Fang Dahong, Cai Dezhong, Hu Dedi, Li Shikai, and Ma Chaoxing fled to Fujian to borrow the cover of Southern Shaolin to secretly carry out the "anti-Qing and Ming" activities, becoming the early organization and leader of the Heaven and Earth Society, and was called "the five ancestors of Hongmen" by later generations. In 1674, five ancestral halls were built. Among them, Fang Dahong came to Guangdong and established the "Hong Shun Hall".

Around 1690, Fang Dahong took a boat to Zhejiang to visit his younger brother Li Shikai, but missed the voyage on the way. Unexpectedly, a strong wind broke out on the sea, and the tiles were exhausted, and unfortunately sank into the sea and died.

The true origin of Hongmen is currently unverifiable, because physical materials and documentary historical materials are very scarce. The most widely spread of Hongmen founders are the following two:

1, Chen Jinnan.

It was Chen Jinnan who founded the Heaven and Earth Society, and the Heaven and Earth Society is Hongmen. So Chen Jinnan is the founder of Hongmen. At the same time, Chen Jinnan himself is a subordinate of Zheng Chenggong.

He was also appointed by Zheng Chenggong to found the Heaven and Earth Society, so some people say that Zheng Chenggong is the real founder of the Heaven and Earth Society. But the authenticity is questionable. Chen Jinnan was a man of letters, so it is hard to imagine that he could have founded such a paramilitary organization.

2. Five young monks.

Another theory comes from oral traditions and early historical materials within Hongmen. According to this theory, during the Kangxi period, in order to suppress the anti-Qing forces, the imperial court burned down the Shaolin Temple, and only five young monks escaped. After these five people returned to the world, they became brothers and founded Hongmen.

Hongyin is the same as Hong, alluding to the Zhu Ming Dynasty, and from the name it has the meaning of anti-Qing and Ming restoration. These five monks were the founders of the Hongmen.

But there are also a number of problems with this statement. First of all, Songshan Shaolin Temple was not burned down by the Qing Dynasty in history. Therefore, some people say that the Shaolin Temple here is actually the Southern Shaolin of Fujian.

Fujian's Southern Shaolin itself is a historical mystery. There is no definite answer to where Southern Shaolin is and how long it has existed.

Hongmen founded a simple analysis

First, Hongmen may have had multiple sources of origin, and finally was created in the form of a merger. Hongmen is a highly loose organization, each hall is independent of each other, not subordinate to each other, and there is no real Hongmen boss.

Second, urban displacement may be the real reason for the formation of Hongmen. During the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty, due to the rapid population growth and the increasing impoverishment of the peasants, more and more people went to the cities to make a living, so a serious problem of urban displacement was formed. Urban displacement, in turn, led to a rise in secret societies.

In addition to Hongmen, there are similar organizations in other places, such as the Elder Brothers' Association in Sichuan and the Beggar Gang in Hebei.

Third, the political concept of opposing the Qing Dynasty and restoring the Ming Dynasty was due to regional reasons. The mountains in Fujian and Guangdong are far away from the emperor, and the control ability of the Qing ** is relatively weak, and there are a large number of anti-Qing people who are incognito here. These people participated in Hongmen's activities before injecting political ideas against the Qing Dynasty and the restoration of the Ming Dynasty into the group.

Rather than the other way around, Hongmen rallied the people with the idea of opposing the Qing Dynasty and restoring the Ming Dynasty.

The Hongmen organization has no qualifications for membership, only needs to have an introducer, and treats each other as brothers and sisters after joining, so although it is a secret organization, it has developed rapidly.

During the Qing Dynasty, Hongmen was at the beginning of its collapse. Some of the core personnel of Hongmen joined the Qiankun Society. Legend has it that in the heyday of Hongmen, Qiankun would be an important force in the confrontation with Hongmen, and it was also a means for the Qing Dynasty to suppress Hongmen.

So the organization received behind-the-scenes support from Qing**. When the Hongmen generals collapsed, the Qiankun Society also realized that the lips were dead and the teeth were cold, so they tried their best to accommodate the backbone of the Hongmen. Qiankun Hui and Hongmen are originally the best in the people, so there is no fundamental conflict of interest.
