What is the difference between respect and dignity?

In the field of human dignity, on the one hand, scholars highly respect Kant, and on the other hand, many scholars are full of misunderstandings about Kant's citation and even research. This article begins with a brief overview of two opposing interpretations of Kant's conception of dignity: one view is that, in Kant's view, dignity is intrinsic value, which is the basis of respect, and that everyone has dignity, so everyone should be respected, and therefore human dignity is also the basis of human rights.

Another view is that, for Kant, there is no concept of intrinsic value as a metaphysical property, nor can human dignity be the basis of respect, and that the duty of respect derives from the categorical imperative of reason; Kant's concept of dignity basically belongs to the traditional paradigm, and Kant's use of the word dignity only expresses the relationship between one thing and the other, which does not contain the meaning of equality, so dignity cannot be the basis of human rights. Based on Kant's text, this paper explains Kant's threefold relationship between dignity and value, dignity and respect, dignity and equality, and analyzes the problems and reasons in the above two opposing interpretations. First, Kant's so-called human dignity first refers to the fact that rational people are self-ends, not tools, which expresses the idea that personality is higher than objects.

Kant's intrinsic or absolute value does not refer to a metaphysical property, but to a self-purpose. By understanding intrinsic value in this way, the opposition between the above two interpretations can be partially eliminated. Second, when Kant talks about human dignity, he focuses on emphasizing that morality is the key to the transformation of the kingdom of ends from an ideal to a reality, that is, morality makes people worthy of dignity.

Third, for Kant, there are two levels of human dignity: dignity due to the possession of reason and moral capacity, and dignity due to the fulfillment of moral obligations. Correspondingly, respect has two dimensions:

The duty of self-respect and mutual respect and the fulfillment of moral obligations that deserve respect. Fourth, Kant's conception of dignity contains the meaning of equality at the basic level that human beings have dignity and are different from things, but it is unequal at the level of emphasizing that people deserve dignity because of morality. Kant's other texts may provide greater support for contemporary theories of the defence of human rights than his texts on dignity.
