The main measures to reduce sulphur dioxide emissions in the world at present are:

1. Raw coal desulfurization technology can remove about 40 to 60 inorganic sulfur in coal.

2. Priority is given to the use of low-sulfur fuels, such as low-sulfur coal and natural gas with low sulfur content.

3. Improve coal-fired technology and reduce the emission of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides in the process of coal burning. For example, liquefied coal-fired technology is one of the new technologies that has been welcomed by various countries. It is mainly used to add limestone and dolomite, react with sulfur dioxide, and generate calcium sulfate to be discharged with ash.

4. The flue gas formed after coal combustion is desulfurized before it is discharged into the atmosphere. At present, the lime method is mainly used, which can remove 85-90 sulfur dioxide gas in the flue gas. However, although the desulfurization effect is good, it is very expensive.

For example, the cost of installing a flue gas desulphurisation unit in a thermal power plant can be as much as 25 percent of the total investment in the power plant. This is also one of the main difficulties in managing acid rain.

The term acid rain was first coined by the British chemist Smith in 1872 in his book Air and Rainfall: The Beginnings of Chemical Climatology.

Acid rain is the wet deposition in acid sedimentation, which can be divided into two categories: wet deposition and dry deposition, the former refers to all gaseous pollutants or granular pollutants, with rain, snow, fog or hail and other precipitation forms and fall to the ground, and the latter refers to the acidic substances carried by the dust falling from the air on days when it does not rain.

Acid rain is also divided into nitric acid rain and sulfuric acid rain.

The anions in acid rain are mainly nitrate and sulfate ions, and the main influencing factors of precipitation can be determined according to the concentration of both in acid rain samples, whether sulfur dioxide or nitrogen oxides are the main influencing factors of precipitation. Sulphur dioxide is mainly from the combustion of fossil fuels (e.g. coal), and nitrogen oxides are mainly from pollution sources such as vehicle exhaust.

Prevention and control measures. 1.Develop new energy sources, such as hydrogen, solar, hydro, tidal, geothermal, etc.

2.Use coal-fired desulphurization technology to reduce sulphur dioxide emissions.

3.Industrial production emissions are discharged after treatment.

4.Drive less and use public transport more.

5.Use more clean energy such as natural gas and less coal.
