Modern naval warfare can be roughly divided into four periods: the sail period, the ironclad period, the battleship period and the modern naval warfare period.
Sail period (early 16th century - mid-19th century).
1. Battle of Diu (February 1509).
Opposing sides: Combined Portuguese vs Muslim fleet.
Military strength of both sides: 18 Portuguese sailing ships, less than 2,000 people, 100 old dhows of the Muslim coalition army, more than 10,000 people.
Result: Portuguese victory. Only a few dozen Portuguese troops were wounded, no ships were sunk, and more than half of the Arab troops were **.
The significance of this war: the Arabs lost their naval dominance in the Indian Ocean, and East Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, India and other regions along the Indian Ocean were colonized by Portugal, the Netherlands, France and the British. The battle also ushered in a new era of sail artillery.
2. Battle of the English Channel (July 1588).
Opponents: England vs Spain.
Military strength of both sides: The British commanded dozens of small raider ships under the command of the pirate leader Drake, with strong flexibility and superior long-range firepower. Spain is the main force of the "Invincible Armada", with more than 100 ships, ** large in size and large caliber of artillery.
Result: British victory. The British lost only more than 10 ships and hundreds of men, and the Spanish "Invincible Armada" was almost completely annihilated.
The significance of this war: Britain gradually grasped the control of the Atlantic Sea, colonized, plundered, and took the initiative, laying the foundation for the future "empire on which the sun never sets". Spain fell from its position as the supremacy of the seas and has been in a state of collapse ever since.
3. Three Anglo-Dutch naval battles (1652-1654, 1665-1667, 1672-1674).
Opponents: England vs Netherlands.
Result: Holland wins. Although Britain lost the last two Anglo-Dutch wars, it was undefeated and won with the support of strong national strength. In addition to the attrition of the Netherlands in naval battles with the British, they also had to fight with France in land battles, and finally their national strength was exhausted.
Significance of this battle: Although the Dutch defeated Britain in the war, under the pressure of both Britain and France, they finally gave up some commercial interests in exchange for peace. After more than 20 years of Anglo-Dutch war, the Netherlands' maritime supremacy was severely weakened and laid the foundation for the establishment of Britain's maritime power.
In addition, Anglo-Dutch naval battles are generally regarded by military scientists as the origin of modern naval warfare.
4. The War of the Spanish Succession (1702-1704).
Opponents: France vs. Great Britain (with some Dutch and Spanish fleets).
Result: Great Britain wins. France consumed almost all of its large ships in 2 years of naval battles, while British losses were relatively small.
The significance of the battle: the French navy could only defend its homeland and colonies, and could no longer compete with Britain for maritime supremacy.
