History says that there are records of painted patterns in the era of the Yellow Emperor. That is to say, ancient primitive humans have long known how to beautify themselves with color. At the beginning, the color is applied to the body, which is called "Zhangshen"; and then further pierced on the body, called "tattoo"; Later, it was painted on clothes, and then developed into embroidery on clothing.
Shangshu said that Yu Shun's clothes have colorful colors, and there are six kinds of patterns on the top, namely the sun, the moon, the stars, the mountains, the dragon, and the Chinese insects; There are six kinds of patterns in the lower clothes, which are Zongyi, algae, fire, pink rice, 黼, 黻, a total of 12 kinds of slag containing patterns, called 12 chapters. At least two of them are embroidered (finger 黼黻). In the Zhou Dynasty's "Book of Rites and Sacrifices", it is said that "in ancient times, the princes of the Son of Heaven all had offices to raise silkworms.
Silkworms are ripe, offering cocoons to reel silk, dyeing them into red, green, Xuan, yellow and other colors, such as talking and laughing as "黼黻 article" (that is, using different colors of silk threads, embroidered into various patterns on the dress). According to Cihai, the character "黼 (phonetic)" is interpreted as embroidering a half-black and half-white pattern on ancient ceremonial dresses; The character "黻 (musical note)" is interpreted as embroidering a half-blue and half-black pattern on an ancient dress. As for the word "article", it has become a word in modern Chinese, and the meaning is very clear, but in ancient Chinese, it has a different meaning.
It is called "text" with blue and red thread embroidery, and it is called "chapter" with red and white thread embroidery. In fact, the word "article" originally meant splendid, and later it was translated into a metaphor. Another meaning of "wen" refers to painting, which is the same as "pattern".
According to the annotation, "the text refers to the painting, and the dress and the top of the ancient sacrifice service are painted, and the bottom is embroidered". In a word, embroidery originated very early and has existed since ancient times.
At present, the earliest embroidery object that can be seen is of course the "dragon, phoenix and tiger pattern embroidery" unearthed from the tomb of Chu in the Warring States period in Jingzhou (see the picture on the left). This is a well-preserved work that is represented by the lock embroidery method on the ground. In addition, there are dragon and phoenix embroidery silk unearthed from the same tomb, and the embroidery of Chu State unearthed in Changsha Martyrs Park in Hunan Province, which is also very well preserved, which is the best information for understanding ancient embroidery.
