The ancients made a summary, saying that "within the inch, the law is in the palm of the finger, outside the inch, the law is also the elbow and wrist", which means that the size of the word is within one inch, basically in the fingers and palms, and the larger the font size, it is necessary to take into account the control of the wrist and elbow.

Regarding the wrist, there are three ways: pillow, lift, and suspension. Pillow wrist is the wrist of the writing hand pillowed on the back of the other hand; Wrist lift is the point of force to lift the whole wrist and still have support on the table; Hanging the wrist means that even the wrist and elbow are suspended, and it is not associated with the desktop.

When writing large characters, raise your wrist and your entire elbow so that the brush is steady and vertically downward. At this time, there is more room for the hand to move, and it is easy to write a one-meter-long line. If you are writing in small letters, you need to put your wrist on the paper or on the other hand, or lift it slightly, because then we need more fine control and put the effort on the tip of the pen, without much space movement.

The same is true for the height of the pen, the larger the word, the higher the pen; The smaller the word, the lower the pen.

When I first started laying the foundation, I thought that I should start from difficult to easy, start with standing hanging bowls, first improve stability, and then start writing small characters, practice wrist lifting, pillow wrist lifting, and gradually improve accuracy.

It's the same with the pen, and the ancients had different ways of holding the pen depending on the situation of writing. For example, in the past, when the ancients sat on the ground, sometimes the paper was not placed flat on the table, but obliquely, and the way of holding the pen with three fingers was more helpful to ensure that the tip of the pen was perpendicular to the paper, which was more suitable for this situation. During the Sui and Tang dynasties, there were tables and chairs, and with the development, by the Song Dynasty, they became more and more popular, and people began to sit with their feet down.

When the paper is laid flat, it is easier to keep the nib perpendicular to the paper, making it a more common way to hold the pen in this writing angle.

The most commonly used five-finger pen method, the main point is the five words "pull, press, hook, grid, and resist".

From the shoulder, the hour, the wrist to the fingers, it forms a flexible axis, and finally settles on the paper, which is expressed as the power of our pen.

It takes a long time to achieve this tacit understanding. The best state is probably that we don't feel that we have a pen in our hands, and when the hand and pen are used together, the pen becomes a continuation of our body when we express.

That is to say, there is no certain standard way to hold the pen, as long as the palm of the hand is empty, the spirit can be grasped. Another example is the grip method, where you grasp the pen with the palm of your hand and write it whole. The method is to put the fingertips of five fingers together and pinch the tail of the pen barrel to write.

The ancients had many methods of holding the pen, but the most widely used, and it can also be said that the generally accepted is the five-finger pen holding method of "pressing, pressing, hooking, topping, and resisting".

The index finger of the right hand is on top, followed by the thumb and the middle finger.

When holding a pen and writing, the position and angle of holding the pen are important.

1. Try to hold it low when writing small letters, because the characters are small, which is conducive to making the brush move freely in a narrow range. When writing a large or larger word, it should be held a little higher, and the position is about the middle of the length of the pen barrel, not over, but some people like to hold it closely, which is a matter of habit. When the fingers are placed in the middle position, on the one hand, the power can be distributed to the "whole body" of the brush, and on the other hand, it can also make the human mechanical ability more freely, so this slightly higher position in the middle is a common method.

The reason why the brush is difficult to write is because the brush itself is soft, and it is necessary to do 10,000 millimeters of force when writing, in addition to the requirements for the tightness of the pen and the height of the pen, there is also an important requirement that the brush corresponds to the angle of the paper. 4. There should be changes in the power of the pen. The brush character requires obvious changes in pen strength, that is, "full but not impetuous, sparse and dense".

5. The writing rhythm should be stable. The calligraphy requires a stable rhythm, not impatient, and not too slow, in order to ensure the coordination and neatness of the glyphs.
