The back is grayish-brown, the abdomen is grayish and slightly yellowish, and the body is rounded and cylindrical, without scales.

The head is large, the mouth is small, and the snout is pointed. The overall body shape is similar to that of the jue fish. The species originated in the Cretaceous period 130,000 years ago, and is the only precious fish in the Heilongjiang River basin in the world.

It is mainly distributed in the Heilongjiang River and the lakes connected with its larger tributaries, especially in the middle reaches of the Heilongjiang River. Secondly, it is distributed in the lower reaches of the Ussuri River and the Songhua River, and it is also occasionally found in the lower reaches of the Nenjiang River. It is a freshwater fish that never swims into the sea, and is divided into populations in the estuary of the Heilongjiang River, populations that live in the river all year round, and populations in the freshwater waters along the coasts of the Sea of Okhotsk and the Sea of Japan.

Foraging is an active swimmer, foraging all year round, wintering deep in the river, and sexually mature individuals begin to migrate to spawning grounds in early spring. The Da's fish is a large, carnivorous freshwater fish. The larvae feed on benthic invertebrates, crustaceans, small fish, shrimp, insect larvae, etc.

The mouth is located on the ventral surface of the head, large, half-moon-shaped, with 2 pairs of tentacles in front of the mouth and on the ventral surface of the snout, and 1 pair in the middle forward. The snout is triangular and pointed. The left and right gill membranes are connected to each other, which is different from sturgeon and is one of the classification bases for eel and sturgeon.

There are two types: long-snouted and short-snouted.

The body is slender and serpentine, about 20-70 cm long, and can reach up to 1 meter long. The anterior part of the body is rounded and posteriorly flattened, and the tip of the tail is thin. The head is long and rounded.

The mouth is large, terminal, the upper jaw is slightly protruding, and the lip is quite developed. There are fine teeth in the upper and lower jaws and on the oral cavity. The eyes are small and covered by a thin skin.

The head is thick and the tail is thin, the body surface is protected by a smooth mucosa, no scales, the color is yellowish-brown, the body has irregular dark spots, the fins are underdeveloped and basically disappear, and there is only one three-edged thorn on the whole body, and the spines are less and the flesh is thick. The meat is tender and delicious.

It often lives in paddy fields, small rivers, streams, ponds, canals, lakes and other silt water bottoms, and is produced all over China, with more production in the Yangtze River Basin, Liaoning and Tianjin in China, with the production period from June to October, and the most fertile from June to August. It is widely distributed in the eastern part of Asia and nearby islands, from Southeast Asia in the west, to the Philippine Islands in the east, from Japan in the north to the East Indies in the south.
