Benjamin Sinclair Johnson (born December 30, 1961) was a Canadian sprinter who was disqualified from the men's 100m at the 1988 Seoul Games for doping. Ben Johnson rose to prominence in the mid-1980s, with a height of 186 centimetres and explosive power, winning two bronze medals at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles before a lengthy showdown with Carl Lewis. He broke the world record when he won the 100m gold medal in 9.83 seconds at the 1987 World Athletics Championships in Rome, and broke the world record again in the 100m at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul with a stunning time of 9.79 seconds, but was immediately found to have used doping (illegal drug steroids) and was stripped of his results and banned for two years.
His two world records were also cancelled. Ben Johnson returned from suspension in 1991, but he never achieved great results again. In 1993, he was again found to have used doping in a competition in Montreal and was banned for life.
After that, Ben Johnson went to Libya in 1999 to serve as the physical trainer of the Libyan national football team. Under his coaching, Gaddafi's son, Al-Sadi Gaddafi, was offered the opportunity to join Perugia FC in Italy, but soon Gaddafi Jr. was found to have doped and was banned. Ben Johnson also left Libya.
