Docking Guazhou (Wang Anshi, Northern Song Dynasty).
Jingkou Guazhou is a water, Zhongshan is only separated by a few mountains.
The spring breeze is on the south bank of the Green River, when will the bright moon shine on me?
-
Wang Anshi was a native of Linchuan, Fuzhou (now Linchuan County, Jiangxi Province) and one of the eight great families of the Tang and Song dynasties.
In the second year of the reign of Emperor Xining of the Song Dynasty (1069), after Wang Anshi became the prime minister, he was determined to reform and implement a new law, but was resolutely opposed by the big landlords and big bureaucrats, and was dismissed within a few years. He was bored in the capital, and decided to go back to Nanjing to see his wife and children.
In the spring of the second year, Wang Anshi went south from Bianjing to Yangzhou, and then took a boat west back to Jinling (Nanjing, Jiangsu Province), and when he passed through Jingkou (Zhenjiang City, Jiangsu Province) to Guazhou, which was across the river, the boat docked at the wharf and did not go anymore. He stood on the bow of the boat, looking westward, but saw that the green mountains were faint, the river was surging, the spring breeze was green, the bright moon was in the sky, and he was touching the scene, and he missed the relatives of Jinling Zhongshan (also known as Purple Mountain) even more. He walked into the ship, took out a pen and paper, and after a little thought, he wrote a poem entitled "Docking the Boat Guazhou":
Jingkou Guazhou is a water, Zhongshan is only separated by a few mountains.
The spring breeze has come to the south bank of the river again, when will the bright moon shine on me?
After writing, Wang Anshi felt that the word "to" in "the spring breeze and the south bank of the Green River" was too dead, and he couldn't see what the scene was when the spring breeze arrived in the south of the Yangtze River, and lacked poetry. Later, after thinking about it, I felt that the word "pass" was inappropriate. Although the word "pass" is more vivid than the word "to", it writes the dynamics of the spring breeze passing by, but it is still not enough to express the eagerness of wanting to return to Jinling.
So the word "pass" was circled and changed to the word "in" and "full". After changing it more than ten times, Wang Anshi still did not find the word he was most satisfied with. He felt a little headache, so he stepped out of the cabin to enjoy the scenery and give his mind a break.
Wang Anshi walked to the bow of the boat, looking at the south of the Yangtze River, the spring breeze blowing, the grass swaying, the wheat waves undulating, it looks more vibrant, the scenery is picturesque. He felt refreshed, and suddenly saw the spring grass green, this "green" word, isn't it the word I was looking for? The word "green" expresses the vibrant and spring-like moving scene of the entire Jiangnan.
Thinking of this, Wang Anshi was so unhappy, he hurriedly ran into the cabin, took out another piece of paper, and changed the sentence "the spring breeze to the south bank of the Yangtze River" in the original poem to "The spring breeze and the south bank of the green river".
In order to highlight the hard-won word "green" that he repeatedly scrutinized, Wang Anshi specially wrote "green" a little bigger, which is very eye-catching.
The word "green" makes the whole poem very colorful, and the whole poem comes alive. This "green" word has become what later generations call the "poetic eye". Later, many articles on refining characters took him as an example.

There is only a Yangtze River between Jingkou and Ranfu Guazhou, and Zhongshan Yin, where I live, is behind several mountains. The warm spring breeze blows the fields in the south of the Yangtze River, when will the bright moon shine on me and return to my home under Zhongshan?

Translation:The boat was moored on the shore of Guazhou, and I stood at the ferry and looked at it from afar: the Jingkou on the other side and the Guazhou on this side are only separated by a water (Yangtze River), so Zhongshan, where my hometown is located, is only a few mountains away from here.
The spring breeze blew green the south bank of the Yangtze River again, but I don't know when the bright moon will shine on me and go home.
Full text appreciation:The poem is titled "Docking the Boat in Guazhou", which points out the poet's foothold. The first sentence "Jingkou Guazhou is a water" writes the scene of hope.
The poet stood at the Guazhou ferry on the north bank of the Yangtze River and looked south, and saw that the "Jingkou" on the south bank was so close to the "Guazhou" here, just a distance from the river, and couldn't help but think that Zhongshan where his home was located was only a few mountains away, and it was not far away. The second sentence "Zhongshan is only separated by a few mountains" suggests that the poet is in the mood of returning to his heart like an arrow.

The whole poem is: Jingkou Guazhou is a water, and Zhongshan is only separated by a few mountains. The spring breeze is on the south bank of the Green River, when will the bright moon shine on me?
Through the description of spring scenes, this poem expresses the poet's helplessness to become an official this time and his thoughts and feelings of eagerly returning to his hometown Jiangning.
Translation: Jingkou and Guazhou are only a water away, and Zhongshan is only separated by a few green mountains.
The gentle spring breeze blew green the south bank of the river again, but when will you be able to go home according to me, O bright moon in the sky?
Background of creation. In the fourth year of Song Jingyou (1037), Wang Anshi settled in Jiangning (now Nanjing, Jiangsu) with his father Wang Yi, where Wang Anshi grew up and had a deep affection for Zhongshan. In the second year of Shenzong Xining (1069), Wang Anshi was appointed as the governor (deputy prime minister); The following year, he was appointed as the prime minister of the same state and began to implement the reforms. Due to attacks from opposition forces, he was forced to resign as prime minister several times.
This poem was written in February of the eighth year of Xining (1075), when Wang Anshi visited the prime minister for the second time and entered Beijing.
The first sentence of the poem reveals a relaxed and happy mood by writing about the short distance between Jingkou and Guazhou and the speed of the boat; In the second sentence, the poet looks back at Zhongshan, where he lives, and feels reluctant; The third sentence describes the scenery of the south of the Yangtze River full of spring; Finally, it ends in a questioning tone, once again emphasizing the longing for his hometown.
Green, blow green also, go back to your hometown.
In the early spring of one year, the poet Wang Anshi arrived at the Guazhou ferry from Yangzhou, and wanted to return to his apartment in Zhongshan in Jinling as soon as possible, where he had been living since he was deposed due to the failure of the reform. He planned to cross the Yangtze River by boat, go ashore at Jingkou (present-day Zhenjiang, Jiangsu Province) on the other side, and then hurried back to Zhongshan overnight. >>>More
