Ji Xianlin is a famous paleographer, historian and writer. He was a member of the Department of Philosophy and Social Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Vice President of Peking University, and Director of the Institute of South Asian Studies of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.
Ji Xianlin was born in 1911 in Qingping County, Shandong Province (now merged into Linqing City). He studied at Jinan Sanhe Street Primary School, Jinan No. 1 Middle School, and Shandong University. In 1930, he was admitted to the Department of Western Literature of Tsinghua University.
In 1935, he was admitted to Tsinghua University as an exchange graduate student with Germany, and went to Germany to study Sanskrit, Pali and Tocharian at the University of Göttingen. He received his doctorate in philosophy in 1941. He returned to China in 1946, and in the autumn of the same year, upon the recommendation of Chen Yinke, Ji Xianlin was hired as a professor at Peking University, founded the Department of Oriental Languages, and served as a professor and director of the Department of Oriental Languages and Literatures at Peking University.
In 1956, he was elected as a member of the Department of Philosophy and Social Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. In 1978, he was appointed Vice President of Peking University and Director of the Institute of South Asian Studies jointly established by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and Peking University. In 1984, the institute was divided and he was reappointed as the director of the Institute of South and Southeast Asian Studies of Peking University.
He has served as the President of the Chinese Society of Foreign Literature, the President of the China South Asia Society, the Honorary President of the Chinese Society of Ethnic Paleography, the President of the Chinese Chinese Language Society, the President of the Chinese Foreign Language Teaching Research Association, the Vice President of the Chinese Association of Higher Education, and the President of the Dunhuang and Turpan Society of China. His works have been compiled into 24 volumes, including ancient Indian languages, Sino-Indian cultural relations, Indian history and culture, Chinese and Oriental cultures, Buddhism, comparative literature and folklore, sugar history, Yehuo Luowen, prose, prefaces, and translations of Sanskrit and other literary works.
Ji Xianlin thinks"Cultural exchange is one of the main driving forces of human progress. Human beings must learn from each other and complement each other's weaknesses in order to keep moving forward, and the ultimate goal of human progress must be a certain form of universal harmony"。In the past 10 years, Ji Xianlin has actively participated in the discussion of Eastern and Western cultural issues in China, and has also implemented this idea.
Ji Xianlin divides human culture into four systems: the Chinese cultural system. The Indian cultural system, the Arab-Islamic cultural system, the European and American cultural systems from ancient Greece and Rome to the present, and the first three together constitute the Eastern cultural system, and the latter is the Western cultural system.
Ji Xianlin shouted for the revitalization of the Oriental nation and the revival of Oriental culture, and proposed the changes of Eastern and Western cultures"Thirty years to the east of the river, thirty years to the west of the river", which caused a strong response in China. Ji Xianlin expressed a historical, macroscopic view, and also a view of the long-term domination of the world"Eurocentrism"The positive backlash.
Ji Xianlin returned to China from Germany in 1946 and was hired by Peking University to establish the Department of Oriental Languages and open up the academic garden of Chinese Oriental Studies. He has made many achievements and works in the fields of Buddhist language, history of Sino-Indian cultural relations, history of Buddhism, Indian history, Indian literature and comparative literature, and has become a well-known master of Oriental studies at home and abroad. There is such an academic master as Ji Xianlin in Chinese Oriental Studies, which is really the blessing of Chinese Oriental Studies.
