The deflection of light by two molecules that correspond to isomers is completely opposite. Suppose one of the molecules (right-handed, similar to the right-hand) has a photorotation measurement of 1=+5, then the corresponding left-handed molecular optical rotation must be 2=-5.

Suppose a solution contains both the 100 equivalent of left-handed molecule and the 100 equivalent of right-handed molecule corresponding to each other, it is obvious that the optical rotation of the measurement solution is 0 because the two deflected lights in different directions cancel each other out.

Through the phenomenon of optical rotation of chiral molecules, from which we define optical purity to measure the purity of chiral molecules. The optical purity is 0, that is, the solution contains the same amount of two molecules that correspond to each other, and this state is called racemization. (Optical rotation eliminated).

The greater the optical purity, that is, the higher the content of the above two molecules that are left and right hand (which may be right-handed or left-handed) in the system. If the optical purity is 100%, that is, there will be no optical rotation that is counteracted by molecules of the opposite configuration, that is, the system contains only one chiral molecule (molecule that does not contain opposite chirality) and the optical rotation is 100%.

This left-handed-hand relationship of molecules occupies an absolute majority in chemical synthesis and in nature. They thus also construct a chiral chemical environment, in which molecules with different chiralities behave differently.
