During the Northern and Southern Dynasties, Tao Hongjing, a famous Taoist scholar, medical scientist and politician, was angry at the corruption of the government, abandoned his official position and lived in seclusion in Maoshan in Jiangsu Province, and established the Huayang Pavilion, which was called "Huayang Seclusion", and created the Maoshan sect of Taoism. Emperor Wu of Liang was called the emperor and wanted to let him go out of the mountain as an official, but he refused, so Emperor Liang often exchanged letters with him and discussed major affairs in the court with him, and was known as the "Prime Minister of the Mountain".
Because he wanted to avoid the laity when refining pills, he wanted to continue alchemy in a remote place, so he ignored the emperor's opposition, quietly left Maoshan and went incognito to Lanzhong Mountain in Yongkang, Zhejiang. Finally, he came to Ruian, Zhejiang, and fell in love with the local islands, so he settled here. He collected medicine, alchemy, and practiced medicine in Lantau Mountain, and was called "Tao Gong" by the locals, and later Lantau Mountain was also renamed "Tao Mountain".
But the good times did not last long, and two or three years later, he moved to Daruoyan, Yongjia Nanxi, and there was a "Taogong Cave" in the local area. But within a few months, Emperor Wu of Liang sent someone to pick him up, no matter how much he pleaded, he was not allowed to continue to live in seclusion, but Tao Gong had to follow the visitor back to Beijing.

Tao Hongjing, the word is clear, he was born in the scholar family, and was a famous Taoist priest during the Qi Dynasty and the Liang Dynasty. At this time, Southern Taoism has been officially accepted after the transformation of Ge Hong and Liu Song Taoist Lu Xiujing.
Tao Hongjing further transformed Taoism on this basis, he was good at alchemy, and collected many Taoist classics. He wrote "True Message" and "Dengzhen Hidden Secret", etc., which developed a big step forward in the Taoist theory of alchemy, health preservation, and immortal formation.
He also established the first mature immortal system in the history of Taoism with the Taoist cosmic generation model of yin and yang and the concept of the duality of life and death.
This not only made the genealogy of the gods and goddesses of Taoism take a big step towards philosophization, but also the strict hierarchy of the gods in the genealogy of the gods, which miraculously coincided with the secular hierarchy, so that Taoism had the function of maintaining secular order.
He also slightly changed the concepts of "moderation", "loyalty" and "filial piety" in Confucianism and the doctrines of "reincarnation of life and death", "hell" and "epiphany" in Buddhism and enriched them into Taoist theory, emphasizing that following etiquette and religion is an important way to cultivate the Tao and become immortals, thus forming his new Taoist theory of "attaching equal importance to the three religions" and "integrating the three religions".
Through his transformation, Taoism was able to not only encompass all the basic norms of political culture and ethics in ancient Chinese society, but also meet the political needs of the upper class rulers.
Tao Hongjing was honored by later generations of Taoists as "the nun father of Taoism".
