In 1870 the Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College was founded, and in 1873 it began accepting students. The school was originally located outside of Columbus, and its main majors were agriculture and mechanics. The Ohio Regiments later decided to expand their education, and in 1878 they became known as Ohio State University.
On the sports side, Ohio State joined the Big Ten League in 1912. Academically, Ohio State joined the Association of American Universities in 1916.
