From a product design perspective, Twitter's timeline design is a good example of this, with the avatar on the left and the tweet on the right working together to create the feel of a gap in the middle of the axis.

3. Exercise. When we encounter a certain line, the vision will naturally move in these directions, just as we will stand on the street and consciously walk along the two ends of the street. The two endpoints determine the line, defining where it begins and ends, and the presence of the line, or axis, guides and hints at the direction of movement.

4. Continuity.

If the endpoint is uncertain, then you'll usually browse the movement in the direction of the axis until you find something you're interested in, or get bored and close the app. In architecture, it's rare to find an undefined end point, as buildings are often built to last forever, but UI design is different, and scrolling indefinitely is a very popular design technique.

2. Symmetry. When the elements are placed evenly on both sides of the axis, they form a symmetrical relationship. When the elements are precisely matched one-to-one on both sides of the axis, they form a perfect symmetry.
