Why did Taoism flourish in Mongolia and then decline so quickly?

Why did Kublai Khan suppress Taoism? The reason is related to his uncle, Ogedei. Kublai Khan was the son of Genghis Khan's fourth son, Tuolei, and Ogedai was the third son of Genghis Khan.

Later, when Kublai Khan established himself as Khan, the descendants of Ogedai refused to accept it, did not recognize Kublai Khan's throne, and repeatedly rebelled in the northwest. Because the Mengyuan nobles of the Ogedai line always respected Taoism, Kublai Khan regarded Taoism as the old party of the Ogedai lineage, and he was doubly suspicious.

Later, He Juchuan, a Taoist priest of Yanjing Changchun Palace, wrote a letter to stop Kublai Khan from attacking the Song Dynasty, and those who had good deeds took the opportunity to slander him, saying that he did not have the same heart as Kublai Khan, and falsely accused Quanzhen Dao of occupying more than 480 Buddhist temples in the past by relying on the power of Yuan Taizu and Yuan Taizong. This lawsuit was very tricky and caused a catastrophe to Taoism.

In the second year after the fall of the Southern Song Dynasty (to the 18th year of the Yuan Dynasty), Kublai Khan convened a Buddhist and Taoist debate conference, blessed the Buddha and suppressed the Tao, built a scripture burning platform in Yanjing, and ordered the collection and burning of Taoist classics. He also ordered all localities to build burning scripture platforms, and to confiscate Taoist scriptures and seal plates throughout the country and destroy them. This is the famous "Disaster of the Yuan Dynasty" in the history of the Yuan Dynasty.

"The Disaster of the Burning of the Scriptures of the Yuan Dynasty" is the biggest disaster of Taoism in Chinese history, and after the burning of the scriptures, the ruling group of the Mengyuan Dynasty also changed its previous religious policy, and most of the ancient Chinese Taoist classics were incomplete after the fire of the Yuan Dynasty.

This time, the destruction and prohibition of "Daozang" was carried out very thoroughly, and the people did not dare to hide it. It has caused an unprecedented catastrophe in the history of Chinese culture, which can never be remedied.

The Qing Dynasty was dominated by the Manchurians in the Central Plains, and there was a certain degree of discrimination and scruples against the Han people. For example, Zhang Tianshi, who was in charge of Taoism in the world, was demoted from the status of the second rank of the national teacher to the fifth grade, which was inferior to the status of a prefect.

At the end of the Qing Dynasty, the Taoist temples in many counties were changed to Buddhist temples by the Qing Dynasty. For example, in Taiwan, it is stipulated that there can be Taoist statues in temples, and many Han people have changed Taoist temples to Buddhist temples in order to retain Taoist statues. After 300 years of suppression by the Manchu Qing Dynasty, Taoism has not been able to fully recover until now.
