Looks like a kingdom of poverty.
Burundi is an agricultural and pastoral country and one of the least developed countries in the world declared by the United Nations. The difficulty in developing its economy lies in the fact that the country is small, has a large population, lacks resources, and has no access to the sea. In 1991, Burundi signed the third phase (1991-1994) structural adjustment plan agreement with the International Monetary Organization, emphasizing the priority development of agriculture, the cultivation of diversified operations, the development of agricultural processing, the improvement of transportation, the expansion of foreign affairs, the rectification of state-owned enterprises, and privatization, and the implementation of comprehensive reforms.
GDP in 1992 was 229.1 billion buffaloes. The unit of currency is the Burundian franc and the exchange rate is the cloth franc to the United States dollar (10 December 1993). Mineral deposits mainly include nickel, peat, cerium, tantalum, tin, etc.
The forest cover area is only 3 percent of the country's land. The main industries are agricultural product processing, textiles, cigarettes and power generation. More than 90 percent of the population is engaged in agriculture and animal husbandry.
The main food crops are corn, rice, sorghum, potatoes, plantains, etc. Cash crops include coffee, tea, and cotton, most of which are exported. Pastures occupy 30% of the country's area.
After the 80s, transportation, commerce, banking, and social services have developed year by year. Burundi is a landlocked country with no railways and inaccessible. The total length of the road is 7,500 km.
Bujumbura, the capital, is a transportation hub, and export goods must be transported by land through Rwanda and Uganda to Mombasa Port in Kenya, with a total length of 2,025 kilometers. The main waterway for water transport is Lake Tanganyika, with a total length of 175 km. It is 1,428 kilometers long from south Tanganyika to the south through the port of Kigoma, Tanzania, and then to the port of Les Salaam.
The main port is the port of Bujumbura. Capital International Airport can take off large passenger aircraft. Belgium, France, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Cameroon, Zaire and other countries fly to Bujumbura on regular flights.
Burundi has contacts with more than 50 countries and regions. The main export products are coffee, tea, cotton, skin, etc., and the import is industrial raw materials, machinery and equipment and consumer goods. The largest partner is the European Community.
The main targets are Belgium, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, the United States and Japan. Foreign aid comes mainly from Belgium, France and Germany, as well as from the European Community and United Nations agencies.
