Zheng Zhenduo Zheng Zhenduo (1989-1958) was a modern writer, literary historian, famous scholar, and one of the active advocates of the New Culture Movement. Born into a poor family, he enrolled in the Beijing Railway Management School in 1917 with the help of relatives and friends, and after graduation, he worked at the Shanghai Commercial Press. In November 1920, he co-founded the Literary Research Society with Mao Dun, Ye Shengtao and others, and edited the Literary Weekly, the organ of the Literary Research Society.
After 1923, he edited the "** Monthly" for a long time, actively advocated realist literature and literature of blood and tears for life, and devoted himself to translating and introducing the literary works of the Soviet Union and various weak and small nationalities. In 1921, he wrote "The Unified View of Literature", which was the first article in China to theoretically advocate the study of comparative literature. In the same year, he wrote "Suggestions for Sorting Out Chinese Literature", which was the first in China to theoretically put forward the use of new ideas and methods to sort out literary heritage.
His 800,000-word magnum opus, Outline of Literature, can be said to be the first true general history of world literature. Zheng Zhenduo's 700,000-word masterpiece "Illustrated History of Chinese Literature" published in the 30s was the largest and most influential monograph on the history of Chinese literature in China before the liberation. The History of Chinese Folk Literature, published at the same time, is also the first history of folk literature in China, and there is no book that can be replaced so far.
Zheng Zhenduo's contributions to the field of culture other than literature are also admirable. In the 40s, he edited the "Chinese Historical Reference Atlas", "Xuanlantang Series", "Ming Season Historical Materials Series", "Catalogue of Chinese Ancient Ming Pottery Figurines", etc., all of which have made great contributions to the field of Chinese culture. In the 50s, he compiled "Selected Ancient Chinese Woodcuts" and "Selected Paintings of the Song Dynasty", which won the International Most Beautiful Book Award several times in the 80s.
After the liberation, Zheng Zhenduo successively served as a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, director of the Institute of Literature of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and vice minister of the Ministry of Culture. On October 17, 1958, while leading a cultural delegation to visit Afghanistan and the United Arab Republic, he unfortunately died in a plane crash.
