Feyenoord is known as the big three of Dutch football along with Ajax and PSV Eindhoven, and although Feyenoord has won the league title less often than the latter two since the beginning of the last century, it is undeniable that the only one who can compete with Ajax and PSV Eindhoven in the Eredivisie is Feyenoord. Since the club's inception in 1908, they have won 14 Eredivisie titles, 10 Dutch Cups and two UEFA Cups, as well as becoming the first Dutch team to lift the European Cup in 1970. The Feyenoord club was founded in 1908 by two young men who played football, Feyenoord was nothing more than the name of one of their neighbours.
On July 19, 1908, they gathered in a bar in Rotterdam to form the football club, which they named Wilhelmina, a local church after the Queen of the Netherlands. The name of the club was changed twice after that, and in 1912 they finally decided to change the name to Feyenoord. They played in the Dutch league in their first year of existence, and 16 years later, in 1924, Feyenoord won the first Dutch league title in the club's history.
In the years that followed, Feyenoord won the league and the Dutch Cup, but the most memorable was on 6 May 1970, when they defeated Scottish Celtic in Milan to win the European Cup, becoming the first Dutch team to dominate Europe. In front of 25,000 Dutch fans, Feyenoord beat the Scottish champions 2-1 at the San Siro with a goal in the 117th minute of extra time.
The next day, thousands of Dutch fans cheered their heroes all the way back to the Netherlands from Milan to the Netherlands, the only Champions League won by Feyenoord.
