At times, he ventured into the social world—especially the weekly gathering of the scientific community with the great naturalist Joseph Banks—but Banks always made it clear to other guests that Cavendish should never come near him, or even look at him. Those who wanted to listen to him were advised to hang around his neighborhood, as if not intentionally, and then "only if no one there spoke like that." If they were talking about science, they might have gotten a vague answer, but more often than not, they heard an angry scream (which he seemed to have been screaming all the time), turned around to find that there was really no one, and Cavendish fled to a quieter corner.
