The first nature reserve in China is the Dinghushan Nature Reserve. In 1956, Dinghu Mountain became the first nature reserve in New China and the only nature reserve under the Chinese Academy of Sciences. In 1979, it became one of the first nature reserves in China to join the UNESCO Man and the Biosphere Programme.

The Dinghu Mountain Nature Reserve is rich in biodiversity and is known as a "treasure trove of species" and a "gene repository" by biologists.
