But on closer inspection, my view of it has taken a 180-degree turn, and it can be described as a world of difference.
Whatever appears in history must have its rationality, especially the value and significance of existence. We need to treat it from a historicist point of view. The relativist trend of thought has given me a deeper understanding and grasp of history.
When I was a child, whenever I heard the word history, I would think that it was not everything that happened in the past, such as the famous people in history, who made up history. There was once such an idea, especially in middle school, that only what was written in textbooks was called history, and the rest was not called history. I don't know where this idea came from.
But it's naïve and pitiful to think about it now. I'm the kind of student who treats textbooks as Bibles, and only knows how to gnaw on textbooks, and doesn't read the rest of the extracurricular books at all, thinking that they are useless things. I can't help but laugh when I think back to that experience.
Having said that, through the study of relativism, I have at least gained a deeper understanding of the two concepts of historical truth and historical understanding.
Historical truth (the objective reality of history) may not be exhaustive for each of us to understand it, and our historical understanding is subject to the historical materials left to us by our predecessors, which have been processed by our predecessors, have worn their marks, reflect their understanding at that time, and carry their subjective value judgments. Our understanding of history cannot surpass it, and at the same time, it is also subject to the times in which we live. "History is not historiography", let us get out of this notion.
When we engage in the study and research of history, we have two important goals that we must not forget, that is, seeking truth and responding to reality. Truth-seeking is fundamental and must not be reversed. Some people think that since history is moving forward, then modern people must surpass the ancients.
In fact, this kind of thinking is wrong. Thoughts, in particular, are not necessarily so simple. This erroneous concept must be corrected.
