This may not seem like this due to the peer pressure that students are under, however, it is not uncommon for college students to start their educational journey with blank resumes. Part of the reason many students decide to attend a college or university is to gain access to a variety of opportunities both on and off campus. Due to the restrictions of the F-1 and J-1 visas, you may be wondering how you can start gaining experience to write a resume.
In this blog, we'll give you five ways to start building your resume.
In most cases, on-campus jobs are the easiest to obtain for international students because they do not require USCIS approval. However, it is important to remember that you must follow the following rules:
You must maintain valid F1 status.
You can work up to 20 hours per week while the school day is in session.
If you plan to register for the next semester, you can work full-time on campus during holidays and vacations.
Employment may not replace (take away) U.S. residents.
Typically, colleges and universities have job portals** that allow you to find job listings on campus. We recommend that you use this resource first if you have access to it. If your school does not provide this resource or you need additional help, we recommend that you contact an advisor.
Examples of on-campus jobs may include library assistants, technical support, baristas, food court employees, etc.
College and university campuses often offer internship opportunities. However, these opportunities are limited, and it's also a good idea to explore options outside of school. Keep in mind that USCIS approval is required for off-campus work.
We recommend only applying for internships that are relevant to your field of study, as this is the best way to build your resume.
Upon completion of your degree program, you may choose to enroll in a CPT job. The CPT must be part of your curriculum or academic program and can be an internship, co-op education, or any other type of required internship or internship, delivered by the sponsoring employer through a partnership agreement with the school. Even if this type of job is for credit, you can get paid, and it's great to include it on your resume.
You can work on OPT during or after completing your degree program. OPT jobs must be directly related to your field of study, however, OPT jobs are not for course credit as compared to CPT jobs. OPT jobs are designed to help you gain experience in your chosen industry.
Students can apply for OPT after enrolling for at least 9 months and are not allowed to start working until they receive an Employment Authorization Document (EAD) from USCIS.
Now that you have the information about your options, it's time to start thinking about building your resume. For more information on how to craft a resume, visit your campus's Career Center and be sure to check out our sample resume.
