On November 1, 1949, the Chinese Academy of Sciences was established. In early February 1950, the Chinese Academy of Sciences decided to merge the Institute of Physics of the Academia Sinica and the Institute of Physics of the Beijing Research Institute to form the Institute of Applied Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. On May 19, 1950, the Government Council appointed Yan Jici as the first director of the Institute of Applied Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Lu Xueshan as the deputy director.

On August 15, 1950, the Institute of Applied Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (hereinafter referred to as the Institute of Applied Physics) was formally established, and the institute was located in Donghuangchenggen, Beijing. Due to the dispersion of personnel and equipment at that time, coupled with the inconvenience of transportation, the relocation work was not basically completed until June 1952.

On October 8, 1958, with the approval of the Council of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Applied Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences was renamed the Institute of Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (hereinafter referred to as the Institute of Physics) and moved to the current site of Zhongguancun.
