What VSS can do.
You can create a point-in-time copy of data on a specific volume by using VSS; And at some point in the future, restore the data to any point in time you created. These two major features touted by Microsoft can help customers' computers recover accidentally deleted files that can be easily done even by the average employee and without the ability to create an efficient backup strategy.
For IT technical support personnel, the most common request is generally to recover data loss caused by human causes. It is not uncommon for users to inadvertently store files with error messages, accidentally delete files, or other data accidents.
When users need to retrieve data, they often need to ask technical support personnel to pull out the backup tape and perform manual recovery, which is quite a waste of time.
VSS allows administrators to publish shared folders on the server and make point-in-time backups at certain intervals (up to 65 copies can exist at a given time). This allows end users to securely process files and revert to an earlier version at any time without the intervention of the IT department.
VSS issues that should be considered.
The only downside to this service is that you need to leave more disk space for each volume, because you have to store those copies somewhere. However, because VSS uses pointer data, these copies take up much less space than you might think, and you can store them efficiently.
You can also use replication with backup and VSS to move copies to another VSS, an available server at another site. So, if the origin server crashes in a disaster, your end users will still have access to their data. Since VSS takes snapshots at a certain interval and does not lock the parent files when they are used, open file locking does not affect replication and backup tools.
In addition to copying open files, you can also back up VSS snapshots while the end user is working on the files. This feature dramatically improves backup capabilities by eliminating backup windows, open file locking, and other obstacles.
You may also experience CPU utilization issues (when running backups**) and LAN utilization issues (when backing up data across networks), but this does not prevent end users from using files.
The ability to back up VSS snapshots to generate clean data images and restore point-in-time copies. You can either restore the entire snapshot or take what you need, or you can use the VSS backup tool to restore individual files and folders.
Because you back up file copies on a point-in-time basis, it's easy to use the replication tool to instantly move VSS snapshots to a server in another disaster recovery site, where they can be backed up to create an off-site default backup. Companies that need to keep backups in off-site locations will find it fairly simple to implement a disaster recovery (DR) system that works together smoothly.
