On February 11, 1958, the Fifth Session of the First National People's Congress officially approved the Hanyu Pinyin Scheme. Beginning in the fall of 1958, the Hanyu Pinyin Program entered the classrooms of primary schools across the country as a compulsory course for primary school students.

In 1626, the French Jesuit missionary Kinnige published in Hangzhou the Western Confucian Ear and Eye Dictionary, a glossary of Chinese characters phonetic in the Latin alphabet. The scheme used in Zhuyin is a modification of Matteo Ricci's scheme. For the first time, the Jinnige accurately recorded the pronunciation of Chinese characters in the Latin alphabet.

The inventor of Hanyu Pinyin is a famous linguist in China - Zhou Youguang, who entered the Chinese Character Reform Committee in 1955 and engaged in full-time language research. He gave a comprehensive and scientific explanation of the theory and practice of the modernization of the Chinese Chinese language. Zhou Youguang is the main formulator of the Hanyu Pinyin scheme, and presided over the formulation of the "Basic Rules of Hanyu Pinyin Orthography", and he began to edit the "Hanyu Pinyin Vocabulary" in the fifties of the last century, becoming the basis of the computer Chinese thesaurus and is known as the "father of Hanyu Pinyin".

Most of the pronunciation of ancient Chinese characters in China adopts the pronunciation method of "tangent two characters", such as "dong" (all cage cut). This method is too cumbersome to read. In 1610, a French missionary named Kinniglé came to China, and he was a China expert.

In 1626, he wrote a book entitled "Western and Chinese Confucian Ears and Eyes", in which he accurately recorded the pronunciation of Chinese characters for the first time in the pinyin alphabet of the Slender Stool Ding. During his time in China, he became acquainted with Han Yun, Wang Zheng and others, and with their help, he compiled China's first Latinized Pinyin Character Dictionary on the basis of the Western book "The Miracle of Western Characters" written by Matteo Ricci and other missionaries in Chinese.

The Latinization Program of Chinese Characters in the People's Republic of China was studied and formulated by the Hanyu Pinyin Program Committee of the former Chinese Character Reform Committee (now the State Language Commission) during the 1955-1957 Character Reform. This pinyin scheme is mainly used for the annotation of Mandarin pronunciation of Chinese, as a kind of Mandarin phonetic transcription of Chinese characters. On February 11, 1958, the National People's Congress approved the plan.
