John Dalton (6 September 1766 – 27 July 1844) was an English chemist and physicist. He is the proposer of the modern atomic theory.

John Elkan was born in New York City, USA, the eldest son of Alain Elkan (journalist and writer, of French Jewish and Italian Jewish descent) and his mother was Italian Margarita Agnelli.

Elkan's maternal grandparents were Marella Agnelli (daughter of Marella Caracciolo di Castañeto) and industrialist Giani Agnelli. The uncle was the famous banker Ettore Ovaza.

After studying in England and Brazil, Elkan moved with his family to Paris, where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1994 from the École Victor Dulouy in Paris, France.
