Eugene O'Neill was born on October 16, 1888, in New York City, USA. His father was a famous actress and his mother was an excellent ballet dancer. As a child, O'Neill toured with his parents and did not enter elementary school until he was 7 years old.
He entered foster care school in 1906 and then Princeton University, where he dropped out a year later to pursue a variety of careers, including sailors and laborers. In 1912, due to overwork, he suffered from lung disease.
