The mainland has introduced and published Taiwan's high school Chinese textbook "Basic Textbooks of Chinese Studies" and has tried it out in some middle schools.

The content of this set of textbooks is actually a selection of the "Four Books"—the Analects, Mencius, the University, and the Mean.

The contents of the "Four Books" were rearranged and classified. For example, the book "Analects" is divided into four categories: "virtue", "speech", "political affairs", and "literature". Within each category, a number of subheadings are subheaded.

For example, under the "category of virtue", it is divided into "on morality", "on benevolence", "on self-cultivation" and so on. Under "On self-cultivation", there are "On likes and dislikes", "On fortitude" and so on.

Another example is the section on "Words and Deeds", the textbook selects "living in groups all day long, words are not righteous, good deeds are small, it is difficult!" Wait for a total of six relevant quotations, and then ask:

1 Can you give some examples from your daily life to illustrate the phrase "words are not righteous, but good deeds are wise"?

2 Does modern society's emphasis on "self-promotion" contradict Confucius's demand for "being sensitive to words and deeds"?

Such questions guide students to think about how to live in the world and improve their self-cultivation. The most valuable thing is that the textbook does not shy away from the collision between the ancient and the modern, but inspires students to absorb the essence of the classics with a modern perspective and re-understand its value, rather than seeing it as something immutable.

In particular, almost every one of these questions is open-ended, and there is no standard answer.

Such an open textbook of Chinese culture only provides a way of thinking, or a direction of thinking, for us to slowly "regurgitate" and integrate in our future study and life, so that it can be internalized into our own personality cultivation, moral sentiments, values and outlook on life.
