Anonymous users2024-02-06Mintzberg was born on September 2, 1939, in Canada to an ordinary family. My father was the manager of a small company that produced **. When Mintzberg was a child, he wondered what his father was doing in the office.
In his autobiography written in 1993, he showed that it was just a momentary curiosity and had nothing to do with his later career in management.
To be sure, Mintzberg was an average kid, and he didn't do badly in school, but he definitely wasn't outstanding either. After graduating from high school, Mintzberg enrolled in mechanical engineering at McGill University in Montreal, where he averaged grades, because he liked to take things apart (he admits he rarely got them back to their original state). After graduating, he worked as an operations researcher at the Canadian National Railways.
During this time, his interest gradually shifted to how people work.
In 1908, MBA education was born at Harvard Business School, gradually emerged after the war, and became popular in the 60s. It was at that time that Mintzberg, encouraged by his uncle Jack, went to MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) to study management, and the trajectory of his life changed. After receiving his Ph.D., Mintzberg returned to teach at McGill University.
His "deviance" began in his first book, published in 1973, when more than a dozen publishing houses rejected it. Unlike most academics, Mintzberg carefully observed what managers did in the office and found that real bosses spend most of their time responding quickly to crises, a view that is not accepted by many management scholars until today. Professors are generally good at asking challenging questions, but Mintzberg is always refining the answers.
He has devoted his entire academic career to understanding how managers make decisions and how they develop strategies.
In 1998, he wrote down his goal on a piece of paper and locked it in a safe at a bank in Montreal. One day he might open it and see if he had fulfilled his wish. One of them is "change management education".
When asked if he had opened the safe, the professor smiled and said, "Not yet, and I don't know when I'll pick it up." Many of the goals on paper are ambitious and may not be achieved.
Mintzberg doesn't have an MBA at home. His wife, Sasha, is a telecommunications manager who deals with many MBAs, and she understands her husband's job very well. The two daughters, Susie and Lisa, work in mental health and acting.
