In 1922, the young Dalí came to Madrid to study at the San Fernando Academy of Fine Arts. It was here that Dalí's paintings made him famous. In the dreams he depicts, ordinary objects are juxtaposed, distorted, or deformed in a bizarre and unconscionable way.

Dalí's depictions of these objects are meticulously detailed, almost to the point of unmistakable realism, often setting them in a very desolate but sunny landscape, reminiscent of his native Catalonia. Perhaps the most famous of these riddle-like imagery is The Eternity of Memory (1931).
