With the changes in society, salutations such as "beauty" and "handsome guy" have become popular in daily verbal communication. How to act in words in the use of popular salutations and how to avoid pragmatic errors.
As a popular title, "beauty" is derived from the Internet term "Meimei", which is a transliteration of the word "sister" in Hong Kong and Taiwanese Mandarin in the mainland. The literal meaning of "crush" refers to (a woman's) beautiful eyebrows. "Eyebrows" can also mean beautiful women, as recorded in the literature Emperor Tang Ming ordered the court painters to draw a painting called "Ten Eyebrows", which painted ten beauties.
Therefore, later people used "cuties" to refer to young and beautiful women. "Beauty" gradually evolved into a common written language. Especially in the language of the news, such as:
Shen Bing, the beautiful host of the CCTV dialogue program, as the beautiful cutie host of the "Hello, World Cup" program with hundreds of millions of viewers, partnered with the veteran sports host Liu Jianhong, Jinan Times, June 21, 2002); Li Yong, a famous CCTV host, said to the four young women who were about to participate in the show at this year's Lantern Festival riddle guessing program: "Four beauties, please come on stage!" In recent years, the word "beauty" has been more widely used as a colloquial appellation.
This article attempts to interpret this term from the perspective of pragmatics.
Speech act theory and the term "beauty".
The speech act theory was mainly developed by the British philosopher John ? Lens? Austin (John Langshaw Austin, 1962).
and the American Chinese philosopher John? j.John J?
Searle, 1969). Austin argues that people use language not just to speak and express a thought, but to achieve something by speaking—to act on words. He divides this act of speech through words into three types:
1) The act of using words to refer to things, that is, the act of saying meaningful words with correct grammar; (2) the act of acting by words, that is, the act of the speaker having extra-verbal meaning when he or she says certain words; (3) The act of making things happen, that is, the behavior of the listener after being affected after the implementation of certain verbal acts. Among these three types of speech acts, "acting by words" is the aspect that speech act theory pays the most attention to. The study of it can help us understand how the speaker expresses the "extraverbal meaning" through the "literal meaning", or how the listener derives the "extraverbal meaning" from the "literal meaning" of the speaker.
The American Chinese philosopher Searle developed Austin's theory of speech acts and proposed the concept of indirect speech acts: when the speaker is unwilling to directly use Shi Wei for some intention, he will use indirect speech means to achieve a certain speech act.
