Wu Ping was born in Huanggang, Hubei Province. From 1972 to 1979, he studied at Huanggang Middle School. In September 1979, he was admitted to the Department of Library Science of Wuhan University.
In 1983, he received a bachelor's degree and stayed at the university in the same year to teach in the publishing major. In 1993, he was admitted to the doctoral program, and in 1996, he received a doctorate degree in modern bibliography. In the same year, he was promoted to associate professor.
In June 1998, he was appointed as the Deputy Director of the Academic Affairs Office of Wuhan University. From January 2004 to June 2012, he served as the Director of the Academic Affairs Department of Wuhan University. He is currently a member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee and Vice President of Huazhong Agricultural University.

He has won the first and second prizes of the National Teaching Achievement Award, the first and second prizes of the Hubei Provincial Excellent Teaching Achievement Award, and the special prize of Wuhan University Outstanding Teaching Achievement. She has been rated as an outstanding young female faculty member in Hubei Province and an outstanding young female faculty member of Wuhan University; He has won the first prize of Wuhan University's Outstanding Party Member, Outstanding Educator, Young Teacher Lecture Competition, and Undergraduate Teaching Quality Excellence Award. In June 2007, he was elected as a representative of the 9th Party Congress of Hubei Province.
