Wu Ping was born in Huanggang, Hubei Province. From 1972 to 1979, he studied at Huanggang Middle School. In September 1979, he was admitted to the Department of Library Science of Wuhan University.

In 1983, he received a bachelor's degree and stayed at the university in the same year to teach in the publishing major. In 1993, he was admitted to the doctoral program, and in 1996, he received a doctorate degree in modern bibliography. In the same year, he was promoted to associate professor.

In June 1998, he was appointed as the Deputy Director of the Academic Affairs Office of Wuhan University. From January 2004 to June 2012, he served as the Director of the Academic Affairs Department of Wuhan University.
