Festivals and celebrations.
Since ancient times, there have been various festivals and celebrations around the world. Most ancient festivals celebrate the end of the bitter cold, the planting in the spring and the harvest in the fall. Sometimes, celebrations are also held when hunters catch their prey, and in those times, people would go hungry if food was hard to find, especially during the cold winters.
Nowadays festivals have many origins, some are religious, some are seasonal, and some commemorate special people and events.
Day of the Dead. Some festivals are to commemorate the deceased or to satisfy the ancestors, who may return to the world to help or to cause harm. During the Monran Bon festival in Japan, people sweep tombs and burn incense to remember their ancestors.
They also lit lanterns and played music because they believed that by doing so, they would bring their ancestors back into the world. In Mexico, Day of the Dead falls in early November. On this important holiday, people eat food made in the shape of a skull and cakes decorated with bones.
They offered food, flowers, and gifts to the dead. Halloween also stems from the ancient belief that the souls of the dead will return to earth. Halloween is now a holiday for children, who can dress up at their neighbor's house and ask for candy.
If the neighbors don't give them any candy, the children will play tricks on them.

My first train journey.
I'm Alice Thompson. I'm 18 years old from Sydney, Australia.
Recently I made my first long-distance train journey. It's amazing! A friend and I were on a famous Afghan train.
We got on in Sydney and got off at Allie Prince in Central Australia, a journey of over 4,000 kilometres. The whole trip took us two days and two nights.
The train ride was comfortable and the food on board was delicious. The delicious meals we ate were made by master cooks. A few hundred kilometers from the beginning of the journey, the scenery is beautiful.
There are fields where the soil is crimson red. Then came the desert. The sun is shining, there is no wind and the sky is clear.
But then, it was as if time and space had suddenly changed. What catches your eye is a number of abandoned farmsteads that were built more than 100 years ago. The train is very comfortable and the people on board are friendly.
During the day, I sit and look out the window, sometimes talking to other travelers. I read books and listened to Chinese tapes (I learned Chinese at school).
One night, about the middle of the night, I was watching the night sky for almost a full hour. The stars blink like diamonds.
Why is the train called the Afghani? Once upon a time, Australians traveled a long way to the central part of the country. They tried to ride horses, but those horses didn't like hot weather and deserts.
One hundred and fifty years ago, they brought in some camels from Afghanistan. Ghan is an abbreviation for Afghanistan.
For long journeys, camels are much stronger than horses. For many years, trained camels carried food and other supplies, returning with wool and other products. Until the twenties of the twentieth century, Afghans and their camels were doing such work.
At that time, a new railway line was built, so the Afghans no longer needed camels In 1925, they passed laws that allowed people to shoot camels if they caused problems. In 1935, police in one town shot 153 camels in just one day.

Do you want to have a friend who can talk about everything and talk to your heart? Or are you worried that your friends will laugh at you and not understand your current predicament? Annie. Frank wanted the first type of friend, so she made Diary her best friend.
Anne lived in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, during World War II. Her family were all Jewish, so they had to go into hiding or they would be captured by the German Nazis. She and her family went into hiding for almost 25 months before they were discovered.
During this time, her only loyal friend was her diary. "I don't want to keep a journal like most people do," she said. I'm going to take this journal as my friend, and I'm going to call this friend of mine Kitty."
Anne had been in hiding there since July 1942, and let's see how she felt.
Thursday, June 15, 1944.
Dear Kitty:
I don't know if it's because I haven't been able to go out for a long time, but I've become crazy about everything that has to do with nature. I remember very well that before, the blue sky, the singing of birds, the moonlight and the flowers had never fascinated me. That's all changed since I've been here.
For example, one night when the weather was very warm, I stayed up until 11:30 and deliberately did not sleep in order to have a good look at the moon alone. But because the moonlight was so bright, I didn't dare open the window. Another time, one night just five months ago, I happened to be upstairs with the window open.
I waited until I had to close the window before going downstairs. In the dark of the night, with the wind and rain, thunder and lightning, I was completely shocked by this power. It was the first time I had witnessed night ...... in a year and a half
Sadly, ......I can only look through the dirty curtains** nature, which hangs in front of the dusty windows. But these are no longer fun, because nature is something you have to experience firsthand.
Your Annie.
