The northern dialects account for about 2 3 of the Zhuang population, and are divided into 8 Tu language areas, namely Yongbei Tu, Youjiang Tu, Guibian Tu, Liujiang Tu, Guibei Tu, Hongshuihe Tu, Qiubei Tu, and Lianshan Tu. The southern dialects account for about 1 3 of the Zhuang population, and the noise is divided into five Tu language areas, namely Yongnan Tu, Zuojiang Tu, Dejing Tu, Yanguang Tu and Wenma Tu. The northern dialect of Zhuang is actually a different dialect of the same language as the Buyi language of Guizhou, while the southern dialect is highly similar to the Dai Yi and Nong languages of Vietnam, and can also be regarded as different dialects of the same language.

Before the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, it was written as "Kou", and after 1949, it was changed to the word "僮" next to a single person, collectively referred to as "僮族" ("僮" and "Zhuang" have the same sound), and after 1965, "僮" was changed to "Zhuang". The language and culture of the Zhuang nationality are basically the same as those of the Buyi people in Guizhou and the Daiyi, Nong and Reyi ethnic groups in Vietnam.

Some foreign scholars have classified Zhuang into the Austro-Thai language family according to the situation of Zhuang cognate words. Zhuang is quite similar to the Thai Chinese, Lao, and Dai languages.
The Zhuang language has its own script, which has been used in the folk since the Tang Dynasty (7th century) in China, and the Han people call it the ancient Zhuang character, and the Zhuang people call themselves "sawndip", which is the meaning of the new word, because this kind of character is composed of Chinese radicals. However, this kind of strong word is not widely used, and it has not been able to be used in the whole.
