The Champions League generally starts in July and ends around May of the following year.
The UEFA Champions League trophy is popularly known as the Big Ears Cup. UEFA rules stipulate that the winning team must return the trophy before next season's final, although they can keep a replica of the trophy that is no more than four-fifths the size of the original. Teams that have won five championships or three times in a row will retain a trophy in perpetuity.
In 1966, Real Madrid retained their first original trophy forever. The then UEFA secretary general Bengt decided to redesign a trophy, a task that was tasked with the Swiss expert Stadlemann (the pre-1966 trophy was not the same as today's Big Ears Cup). Ajax and Bayern Munich have won three consecutive titles, while AC Milan and Liverpool have won more than five times, so they each have a trophy in their collection, and the 2006 and 2007 seasons and beyond.
In 2009, UEFA stipulated that the trophy should no longer be kept in perpetuity, so only the five teams mentioned above kept the original trophy in perpetuity.
