International Anti-Drug Day is 26 June.
In 1839, on June 3 of that year (April 22 of the 19th year of Daoguang), Lin Zexu ordered a batch of confiscated opium to be destroyed in public on Humen Beach in Guangdong, which opened the prelude to the "Humen Tobacco Sale". From that day to June 25, except for the Dragon Boat Festival holiday, the remaining 22 days Humen Beach was destroying opium every day.
The data shows that in 22 days, Lin Zexu destroyed a total of 19,187 boxes and 2,119 bags of opium, with a total weight of 2376254 catties. If this batch were loaded with 20-ton trucks, it would have to be filled with more than 60 trucks.
When Lin Zexu was selling cigarettes in Humen, he allowed foreign businessmen, consuls, foreign journalists, and missionaries to come and visit. Many foreigners simply did not believe that Lin Zexu had the means to destroy all the opium completely. In order to dispel their doubts, Lin Zexu allowed them to enter the inner layer, came to the side of the cigarette pool, and destroyed the whole process of opium at close range.
When encountering a situation that foreigners don't understand, Lin Zexu also sent someone to explain in detail.
After watching the whole process of destroying opium, the foreigners admired Lin Zexu and took off their hats to salute him according to foreign etiquette.
"Humen Tobacco Sales" has attracted great attention at home and abroad and has had a wide impact. Later, the "Humen Tobacco Sale" became an example of the world's anti-drug campaign. Many countries and regions have taken into account their own actual conditions and imitated the "Humen Tobacco Sales" in order to curb the spread of narcotics.
From 12 to 26 June 1987, the United Nations convened a Ministerial Conference on Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking in Vienna on the theme "Love Life, Not Drugs". At the meeting, the participants unanimously agreed to designate June 26, the day of the end of the meeting, as the "International Anti-Drug Day".
This day happened to be the day after Lin Zexu's "Humen Pin-type Dry Smoke" ended.
Since then, Lin Zexu's "Humen Tobacco Sales" has been closely linked to the "International Anti-Drug Day".
China has actively responded to the call of the international community on drug control. Every year, before and after the "International Anti-Drug Day", the first level at all levels will carry out anti-drug propaganda activities through newspapers, periodicals, radio, television and other news media and other forms. The sentencing and execution of a number of heinous drug traffickers has also become an important part of the activities of the International Anti-Drug Day.
