Yuan Longping, born in Beijing on September 7, 1930, is a native of De'an County, Jiangxi Province, a person without party affiliation, and now lives in Changsha, Hunan. He is an expert in hybrid rice breeding in China, known as the "father of hybrid rice" in China, and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
In April 2006, he was elected as a foreign member of the National Academy of Sciences. In 2010, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from Macau University of Science and Technology. In 2011, he received the Mahathir Mohamad Prize in Science.
He is currently a member of the Standing Committee of the 12th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, vice chairman of the Hunan Provincial Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, and vice chairman of the Hunan Provincial Association for Science Director of the National Hybrid Rice Engineering Technology Research Center and Hunan Hybrid Rice Research Center, Honorary Dean of the College of Agronomy and Biotechnology of Southwest University, Professor of Hunan Agricultural University, Visiting Professor of China Agricultural University, Honorary Dean of Huaihua Vocational and Technical College, Honorary Dean of Hunan Biomechanical Vocational and Technical College, Chief Consultant of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, Honorary President of the World Chinese Healthy Diet Association.
On January 3, 2014, Yuan Longping's team responded to the research on genetically modified rice, which has not yet been used in practice. Norwegian parliamentarians have nominated prominent Chinese hybrid rice breeders, Indian geneticists and Pakistani human rights activists for the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize.
