After the outbreak of the Anti-Japanese War in 1937, 10-year-old Yu Guangzhong traveled with his parents to Shanghai, Chongqing and other places.

At the age of 22, Yu Guangzhong came to Taiwan with his family and was admitted to the Department of Foreign Languages of National Taiwan University.

Although he majored in foreign languages, Yu Guangzhong has a strong interest in traditional Chinese culture. He wrote extensively in poetry, prose, criticism, and translation, and the most outstanding of them was poetry. People have commented that his poems have a wide range of themes, changing styles, and a variety of techniques, blending traditional and modern, Chinese and Western brushwork.

As a result, he is known as one of the "Top Ten Poets" of Taiwanese Modernism.

In 1971, after not returning to the mainland for more than 20 years, he felt homesick and wrote a poem in his former residence on Xiamen Street in Taipei. After writing, the poet burst into tears and groaned for a long time. This is the "Homesickness" that was later sung by overseas travelers
