Luo Mingjian arrived in Macao around July 20, 1579, and when he first arrived in Macao, he began to learn Chinese and understand Chinese customs in accordance with the requirements of Alexandre Valignani (1538-1606) that Catholic priests entering China "should learn Chinese and Chinese". Luo Mingjian was a very persevering and gifted missionary, who was able to read 15,000 Chinese characters in 2 years and 4 months after arriving in Macao, and was able to read Chinese books for the first time, and after more than 3 years, he began to write in Chinese. Luo Mingjian's purpose in learning Chinese was to proselytize, and he believed that "this is a necessary step to naturalize them."
The improvement of Luo Mingjian's Chinese skills greatly promoted his missionary career. He established a mission in Macao and began to preach to the Chinese in Chinese. Luo Mingjian named the mission "Jingyan School", which was the first missionary institution in China to use Chinese. It was also the first school in China in the late Ming Dynasty for foreigners to learn Chinese.
The reason why Luo Mingjian became the first Catholic to enter Chinese mainland for a long time in the late Ming Dynasty is directly related to his proficient Chinese ability. During 1581, Luo Mingjian entered Canton three times with Portuguese merchants, and soon gained the trust of Canton Haidao to allow him to spend the night on shore, because Canton Haidao regarded Luo Mingjian as a gentleman of good manners, "a priest and teacher of Chinese literature".
