Xu Xiake (1586, 1641) is known as Hongzu, the word Zhenzhi, and Xiake is his number. He was born in a well-known wealthy family in Jiangyin, Jiangsu. The ancestors were all scholars, and they could be called scholars.
His father, Xu Youmian, did not want to be an official all his life, nor did he want to associate with the powerful, and liked to visit everywhere to enjoy the emperor of mountains and rivers. Influenced by his father at an early age, Xu Xiake loved to read books on history, geography, adventures, and travelogues. These books made him love the magnificent rivers and mountains of his motherland since he was a child, and he was determined to travel all over the famous mountains and rivers.
When he was fifteen years old, he was supposed to pass a boy's exam, but he did not pass it. When the father saw that his son had no intention of becoming famous, he no longer reluctantly encouraged him to read a lot of books and be a learned man. Xu Xiake's ancestors built a 10,000-volume building to store books, which created good conditions for Xu Xiake to read a wide range of books.
He reads very seriously, and he can remember everything he has read when asked by others. The collection of books at home was not enough for him, and he was still collecting books that he had never seen before. As long as he sees a good book, even if he doesn't have any money, he has to take off his clothes and change the book.
At the age of nineteen, his father died. He really wanted to go out to visit the famous mountains and rivers, but according to the moral norms of feudal society, "parents are here, not far away", Xu Xiake was not ready to travel immediately because his mother was in the hall. His mother, a well-read and sensible woman, encouraged her son
As a manly husband, you should aim in all directions. Go out and travel! Go to heaven and earth to stretch your mind and increase your knowledge.
How can I be like a chicken in a fence or a pony on a chariot because I'm here, staying at home and doing nothing? When Xu Xiake heard this, he was very excited and determined to travel far away. Before leaving, he wore the travel crown made for him by his mother, carried simple luggage on his shoulders, and left his hometown.
This year, he was twenty-two years old. From then on, until his death at the age of fifty-six, he spent most of his time traveling and investigating.
Xu Xiake has traveled to 16 provinces, including Jiangsu, Anhui, Zhejiang, Shandong, Hebei, Henan, Shanxi, Shaanxi, Fujian, Jiangxi, Hubei, Hunan, Guangdong, Guangxi, Guizhou, and Yunnan, without any funding at all. To the east of Putuo Mountain in Zhejiang, to the west of Tengchong in Yunnan, to the south of Nanning, Guangxi, and to the north of Panshan in Jixian County, Hebei, footprints throughout most of China. What is even more valuable is that in the more than 30 years of travel and investigation, he mainly relied on trekking on foot, rarely even riding horses and boats, and often carried his own luggage to hurry.
Most of the places he visited were desolate and remote villages, or borderlands that were rarely inhabited. He does not shelter from the wind and rain, is not afraid of tigers and wolves, is in the company of the long wind, accompanied by clouds and mist, fills his hunger with wild fruits, and quenches his thirst with clear springs. He encountered several times in danger of his life, was born and died, and tasted the hardships of the journey.
