But some cars can be hung from N to D without applying the brakes, and some cars cannot. For example, when my car is in neutral, I can hang D gear without stepping on the brakes, sometimes I will directly pull the handbrake in neutral when the red light is in neutral, and when the red light is about to end, I will not step on the brakes and hang D gear, and then let go of the brakes.
And some cars can't, you can't move without stepping on the brake lever in N gear.
