Zi said: Review the old and only the new, and you can comment on the teacher

Zi said: Reviewing the old and learning the new can be a teacher.

Confucius said: Familiarize yourself with the classics extensively, review the knowledge you have learned, and then gain new understandings from them, and strive to absorb new knowledge in order to integrate it. If you have achieved this level, you can be called a teacher.

There are two interpretations of the "learning from the past" in this chapter. One is "to learn the new only by reviewing the past": to review what you have heard and gain new insights from it; The second is "reviewing the old and learning the new": on the one hand, it is necessary to review the stories of the classics, and on the other hand, strive to acquire new knowledge.

I think it may be more complete to combine these two solutions: within the scope of your ability, read the classics as widely as possible, think about the meaning of them repeatedly, and review the knowledge you have heard regularly, hoping to have experience and understanding; And try to absorb new knowledge; In this way, advance can open up the field of human knowledge, and retreat can also give meaning to the wisdom of the sages. In this way, it can be said that only by integrating the old and the new, and connecting the past and the present, can it be called "reviewing the old and learning the new".

Some scholars also think that it is not appropriate to "review the old and learn the new", because according to the literal interpretation, only absorbing ancient and modern knowledge without comprehending the experience is like a buyer and seller of knowledge, which is not enough to be a teacher. So let's take a look at the meaning of "division". In the Analects, the word teacher is found in 14 chapters, and the meaning of it is similar to that of today's teachers.

Reviewing old knowledge and gaining new understanding and experience from it is a good idea to become a teacher.

It's "learning from the past".

Meaning: Review the old knowledge, understand the new knowledge, (you) can be a teacher of others.

When you get a new feeling while reviewing old knowledge, you can become someone else's teacher.

Confucius said: If you get new inspiration from the knowledge you have learned, you can become a teacher.

Modern people translate ancient texts, and I always think that it is not very accurate. Review the old and know the new, I have known this sentence for a long time, and I want to understand or perceive. Is it to review old knowledge and learn new knowledge?
