It is more capable of learning words than parrots and chimpanzees. In one experiment, researchers divided 200 RICO acquaintances into 20 groups of 10. The researchers told the dog to find one of them and bring it back.
In 4 tests, Rico got 40 commands and got it right 37 times. When dogs can't see people to get clues, scientists believe that RICO must understand the meaning of certain words. In another experiment, scientists placed a toy that Rico had never seen before in the same room as seven toys whose names he already knew.
The researchers then ordered Rico to retrieve the toy with a word that Rico had never heard before. Out of 10 tests, RICO got it right 7 times, indicating that RICO used the elimination method to choose the correct answer. A month later, it's amazing what makes Rico half of these new toys.
