The Xinhua dictionary contains a total of about 10,000 words This is what the Xinhua dictionary says in the preface, and it will definitely not be wrong.
As for the total number of Chinese characters, there is no accurate figure so far, on the one hand, because there are too many Chinese characters, it is difficult to count, on the other hand, because there are too many Chinese characters variant, vulgar characters, whether these characters can be counted into the total number of Chinese characters, the academic community has different opinions.
So far, the dictionary with the largest number of Chinese characters is the Great Chinese Dictionary, which contains more than 56,000 prefixes in regular script.

The addition and decrease of 13 pages reflects the gold content.
From the first edition in 1953 to the new edition, the total number of words in the Xinhua Dictionary has always been between 500,000 and 700,000 words, and the new edition is 660,000 words. Over the past 50 years, although it has been revised more than ten times, the "Xinhua Dictionary" has not made fundamental changes in terms of its compilation purpose, overall length, compilation method, basic content and structure, and has maintained its original style characteristics, but its "gold content" has continued to rise.
According to researcher Cheng Rong, in this revision, the revision area is large, but the number of words changed is not too large. Because whether the revision is good or bad depends on whether it maintains and embodies the original style characteristics of the dictionary, whether it is more perfect and more suitable for the needs of contemporary readers, not on the number of modifications. The Xinhua Dictionary has the characteristics of conciseness, practicality, and smallness, so the revisers also consider the non-expansion of the length.
Interestingly, comparing the new edition with the 1998 edition, which served as the base book, reveals a very curious coincidence. The main text of the new edition is 13 pages smaller than that of the 1998 edition, but the appendices and checklists are a full 13 pages longer than the 1998 edition. The size of the two dictionaries can be said to be exactly the same, but the "gold content" of the new edition is higher than that of the old version, because the content has increased, but the length has not increased.
In terms of the number of words received, the first version of 1953 received more than 6,000 words, and in the subsequent revisions, the number of words received continued to increase, and now it is more than 10,000, covering the 7,000 words of the "Modern Chinese General Character List", which can meet the needs of general readers.
