Jean-Daniel Craton (1802 12 15 Geneva - 1893 06 30 Geneva) was the son of Henri Craton and Jeanne-Mart Gil. In 1837, he married Stephanie Adriana Adore.

    Jean-Daniel Cratton (1802- 1893).

He initially majored in law at a college, obtained his doctorate in 1824, and then devoted himself to science and technology. In order to win a competition organized by the Academy of Sciences in Paris, he worked with Charles François Sturme (1803-1855) to study the compression of liquids and to determine the speed of sound propagation in water in Lake Léman, also known as Lake Geneva. This achievement catapulted them to fame, and Craton and Sturm continued their studies in Paris and became assistants to André-Marie Ampère (French physicist, 1775-1836).

On June 11, 1827, they received an award from the French Academy of Sciences.

At the end of 1828, Craton co-founded the École des Arts et des Arts et des Arts et des Arts (now École Polytechnique de Paris) and was appointed professor of mechanics in 1830. In 1839 he returned to Geneva as professor of mechanics dedicated to him, a position he held for 20 years. Among his many achievements, few mention is made of his compressed air rock drill, which was used in tunneling and lighting fountains in Fréjus and Gotthard.

In Geneva, he and Louis Favre established gas city lighting, a technical field in which he excelled. In 1844, Craton worked as an engineer for the construction and piping of the Geneva Gas Plant. From 1839 to 1859 he taught physics and theoretical and applied mechanics at the college.

He was a member of the Council of Deputies (1834-1841), a member of the Great Council (1849), a member of the Administrative Council (1845-1846). In his later years, he summarized his career by collating and publishing a book entitled "Memories and Memoirs, Autobiography", published in Geneva in 1893 and a 636-page book. The book contains a list of his publications (pp. 625-632) and several illustrations.

Cratton's most famous achievements are the determination of the propagation and diffusion of sound in water and the invention of the compressed air rock drill used in the tunnelling of Frejus and Gotthard. The distinguished professor at the Geneva and Paris École Etudes has had successful tests in several areas (including the use of lighting fountains and kites).
