Zhou Jianming, 43 years old this year, began to contact model aircraft at the age of seven or eight, and joined the Shanghai model aircraft team in 1980. That year, he won a national championship in the national competition. In 1981, after China joined the World Nautical Model Federation, it was ready to send a group of competitors to participate in international competitions.
Zhou Jianming was gearing up, but unfortunately although he was the fastest in the trials, his results ranked first from the bottom due to excessive noise. From the national champion to the penultimate one, this huge contrast has caused a lot of ideological pressure on Zhou Jianming. Undeterred, he continued to work on his own and improved his rowing, and soon made a comeback.
Since 1982, in all the national competitions that Zhou Jianming has participated in, the champion has never been lost. Since then, Zhou Jianming has begun to emerge in international model aircraft competitions. In 1983, he made his debut at the World Championships and won a silver medal.
At the 4th World Championships in 1985, he broke the world record for the first time with a domestically produced improved engine and won the world championship. He still remembers that experience vividly. At that time, Zhou Jianming participated in the competition with a domestic engine with a rough appearance.
When the referee learned that his engine was made in China, he looked sarcastic and incredulous. But it was with this engine that Zhou Jianming twice broke the world record held by the Swede. His outstanding performance conquered the foreigners present.
When it was announced that Zhou Jianming had won the championship in English, German and French, many foreign athletes extended their warm congratulations to him and watched his Chinese engine over and over again, feeling incredible. Since then, Zhou Jianming has become a regular winner at the World Championships, and it seems that every World Championship championship is for him. He has won a total of eight world championships and broken the world record nine times.
Asked about his future plans, Zhou Jianming said with some sadness, "I am not young, and I am very burdened."
